International Picnic Day

June 18 celebrates International Picnic Day. Indeed picnics are a French invention, dining under the sky with a little wine, cheese, bread, and fruit. What could be more international?

Picnics with international flair, of course! Shake up your picnics with spice and color. Look to the world outside fried chicken and hot dogs. Enjoy a bento box with rice, vegetables, tempura shrimp, chicken or fish, and sour plums. What an excellent way to celebrate International Sushi Day, too!

Wrap up the flavors of Turkey in flatbreads with delicious meats and cheeses, meatballs or grilled vegetables. Pack up the prosciutto, mozzarella, Parmigiano, olives, pears, bread, and figs for an Italian meal. Don’t forget a sweet dessert, sparkling sodas, and wines chilled to perfection.

In India, bhutta and fruit chaat go into the picnic basket. Bhutta is sweet corn, and fruit chaat is a fruit salad with spicy sauce.
