Haematological variations Of Two Columbiformes Introduced To Awba Dam Ecotourism Centre, University Of Ibadan.

Abstract:

Columbiformes are reputed for their response to intentional introductionand changes in their environment may exert a major effect on their blood ,hence need for this investigation.

Blood samples were obtained from superficial ulna vein of the 128 apparently healthy C. livia and C. guinea into tubes containing EDTA as anticoagulant. Standard morphological, haematological, and etiological analyses were carried out on the birds.  The procedure was carried out on a seasonal basis (wet and dry seasons of 2013-2014). Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Analyses demonstrated a low WBC to RBC ratio (0.004: 25.3) in both species. Values of RBC, WBC, CH, UA, PR, MCV, HB, BV, PG, L/W, HCT, MCH, were 19.1%, 0.95, 56.3, 0.003, 15.8, 2.09%, 1.119, 0.31, 0.54, 0.780, 23.12, 11.4%, while in contrast, CH and UA were rarely detected (0.1%). PG and MCV varied significantly with the Mean of HCT (12.8±0.05, 13.2±0.05) load in the obtained samples, while L/W varied significantly among sampling seasons i.e. wet (19.1% of BV, 12.6% of BV, 0.1% of BV) and dry (18.9% of BV, 12.7% of BV, 0.08% of BV).  The level of HB in male (19.20±8.46108) is significantly lower compared to female (19.70±8.48762). T test (chi square) also showed (Male=15.625, 0.111), (Female=12.125, 0.146) respectively.

Variations existed within the species’ blood composition, suggesting possibility of pathogenic introduction to the tourism site,species may be asymptomatic of some pathogens and need for  periodical haematological monitoring.
