Species on the move. Ancient Egyptian perspective

Abstract:
Ancient Egyptian iconography, full of animals representations, portrays some species constantly, some occasionally, the frequency of depicting others tends to change in time. Zooarchaeological remains do not reflect it well. While one needs to consider the cultural reasons for the phenomenon, ecological changes and species distribution should be taken into account as well. The environmental archaeology has significantly younger traditions than anthropo-focused and strictly cultural archaeology of Egypt. Recently, the topic has gained meaningfully more attention, as do the various disciplines of bioarchaeology. Recent research on the Egyptian environment points to some events in natural history, however the phenomena are not well recognized yet. The swifts in depicted animals may be treated as the result and attestation of the changes, however potentially it may be the opposite, when properly recognized, could be a clue contributing to Egypt environmental changes developing study and recognition.
