Doing species together. Saliba indigenous people and researchers in a mixed and complex method.

The following intervention presents the results of the joint effort between the communities of the Saliba indigenous people of Orocue, Casanare, with the Alexander von Humboldt Institute. In the year 2017, the community contacted the Institute seeking collaboration to initiate a process of characterization of biodiversity in its reservations. They wanted to know the natural wealth of the territory and to gain support in their struggle against of mineral and energetic projects in the region. The community and the Institute developed together a project, that was effectively implemented for indigenous researchers with the support of mixed methods involving social and natural sciences. The researchers also produced data on the relationship between local biodiversity and the sacred sites in their reservations. The results presented here emphasize not only the way in which the experience supports the local organizational processes, but also in how the experience teaches the Institute team about the relationship between a different knowledge system and biodiversity, within the framework of a revision to the way in which IPBES understands the place of indigenous and local knowledge systems with respect to science and biodiversity.
